Lucy Phelps Lampkin lived the modest, but long, life of a planter’s wife in Clarke County, GA. The mother to five children, Lucy Lampkin raised a family in the chaotic period Civil War period, outliving her spouse, Lewis Lampkin, and passing away at age 70 in 1892.

Lucy Phelps Haynes Lampkin was born on January 15, 1821 in Watkinsville, GA to Parmenas Haynes and Jane Phelps Haynes to a family of modest means – able to move around the Southern United States but with little documentation of the family. On May 27, 1844, Lucy Haynes married Lewis Jackson Lampkin. The couple lived modest lives in Athens, GA, with the income earned by Lewis Lampkin, who worked as a planter. Between 1845 and 1860, the couple had five documented children – Lucas H. Lampkin (b. 1845), William W. Lampkin (b. 1848), Robert H. Lampkin (b. 1850), John P. C. Lampkin (b. 1856), and Lucy Mitchell (b. 1859). No records of children can be found after this date, likely as a result of Lewis Lampkin’s service in the Confederate Army 24th Regiment of the Georgia Military beginning in 1862.
