Maria Nickerson lived on Thomas Street in Athens, Georgia when she died, but she was born in Fonds, New York. Her husband, Reuben Nickerson, was a well-known figure in the community and she was respected as well. Mrs. Nickerson’s family history has roots in the Methodist Church as her grandmother, Mary Millington, was a member of the original Methodist Church in England. In the June 30, 1903 edition of the Athens Banner Herald her connection to the Church is featured by making note of her ownership of a bible that founding member Charles Wesley gave to her grandmother in 1783. When Maria Nickerson died in 1913 the Clark County Courier wrote her obituary and highlighted her 54 year membership to the Oconee Street Methodist Church. She is now buried in plot number WH103 in Oconee Hill Cemetery.
