At age 21, Hauser enlisted in the Confederate Army and fought primarily in Virginia. Following the end of the Civil War, Hauser would eventually settle in Athens, Georgia, where he would become an active member of the local community. Opening a cigar shop on the corner of College Avenue and Broad Street, Hauser frequently ran ads in the local paper, organizing events and fundraisers for veterans of the Civil War. Though adopting George in lieu of his given name, Hauser did maintain a sense of connection with his native country, and his travels abroad were well documented in the local paper, which chronicled his trip to Germany in 1891. Announcing his withdrawal from the cigar business in 1904, Hauser grew fruit in the years prior to his death, placing advertisements in the paper to promote his produce.
