Alexander S. Erwin Jr. was the eldest son of Mary Ann Lamar Erwin, the daughter of Howell Cobb, and Alexander Smith Erwin, a prominent judge in Athens. He seemed poised to follow in the footsteps of his successful family. He was the first person to receive a diploma from Athens public schools, graduating at 14. At 17, he became a law student at the University of Georgia and graduated a year later. After graduating, he worked for a few law firms before forming Erwin & Erwin with his father. In 1898, at the age of 23, he was elected to the Georgia General Assembly as the Clarke county representative. He died from slipping on wet stairs and falling off a balcony, fracturing his spine. His death made front page news in both Athens and Atlanta, and his funeral was widely attended by friends, family, members of the bar and members of the three secret societies he was a part of: the Masons, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias.[1]

Laid to rest on the West Hill of Oconee Hill Cemetery in May of 1862, Alonzo S. Church’s gravesite is not difficult to miss. The obelisk monument bearing the names of Church, Robb, and Barrow sits on West Hill lot 103 & ½ and is surrounded by a low, granite fence with wrought iron railings. Within the confines of the fence are Church’s wife, Sarah Tripp Church (1801-1861); son, John B. Church (1832-1863); daughter, Elizabeth Whipple Hunt Church Robb (1823-1868) as well as respective spouses.
The death of Alonzo S. Church was mourned by many in the Athens and University of Georgia communities, as Church had great influence in both. As a Presbyterian minister, Church often assisted poor churches who could not afford a minister by offering his time to these churches while asking that he not be compensated for his efforts. As for the University of Georgia, Church’s influence began when he was named professor of mathematics and astrology in Franklin College. Following the resignation of the President of the University, Dr. Waddell, Dr. Church was chosen as successor – serving as President of the University of Georgia from 1829-1859. His tenure as president was the longest term in the University’s history.
While Alonzo Church was widely respected, there were times of unrest on the University of Georgia’s campus caused by Church’s disciplinarian style which eventually led to a decline in enrollment at the University. During his thirty year tenure, Church oversaw the construction of several campus buildings and landmarks that are now revered as icons of the University. Some of these icons include The Chapel, Phi Kappa Hall, and The Arch at the entrance of North Campus which was funded by the $1,000 sale of the University’s botanical garden. Other buildings in Athens still stand as a reminder of Church, including what now serves as the Athens Welcome Center at 280 East Dougherty Street. This federal style home known as the Church-Waddell-Brumby house was built by Church and is believed to be the oldest surviving house in Athens. Additionally, Church Street in Athens is named after Alonzo S. Church.

Asaph King Childs, who was born on December 9th, 1820 in Springfield, Massachusetts was a well-known merchant and jeweler in Athens, Georgia. He is the founder of National Bank of Athens and Athens Hardware Company. He was also a Confederate veteran in the Civil War. Although he did not die in the battlefield and it is unknown of how he passed away, Childs died in July of 1902. His grave is located at the Oconee Cemetery of Athens, GA -- along with his wife, Susan Ingle Childs, and other Childs family members. Asaph Childs with his brother Otis, worked as silverman and jeweler in Milledgeville, GA from 1835 to 1846. Then, for a year, Childs moved to Athens, GA -- where he and his fellows mates partnered to open Hardware stores: “Two music shops and a photography studio, groceries and clothiers, and numerous other new ventures began.” Thanks to people like Asaph, small businesses grew in Athens than ever before the Civil War. From then on, Asaph continued to reside in Athens with his business and involvement in real estate and banking. One of the fascinating things about Asaph’s grave memorial is the burial with all his related families. All the Childs family members are buried together in the same space. Furthermore, the family’s grave site has a distinct memorial statue -- a female figure holding a long cross. With Childs’ involvement in the Civil War as a Confederate veteran and dedication towards the city of Athens business, perhaps the family’s grave site includes sophisticated memorials to honor the family.

Works Cited "American Silversmiths."
