In the other films, the women might not be as literally independent. John Campbell Pitner was born in Tennessee on July 9th, 1818. At a young age, John Pitner moved to Georgia with his parents. During his young adult years, John Pitner resided at the Newton House Hotel in Athens, Georgia, where he lived with a variety of other young men who were starting out in their careers. Several years later, John Pitner partnered with a man named Mr. England to open a grocery in Athens, which was a bustling business until business was destroyed during the Civil War. John Pitner was married three times during his life and had five children. He retired in 1885 and passed away shortly after in 1889.

Sources:

US Census, 1850 and 1870

Colonel Samuel P. Thurmond was born April 2nd, 1820, and died July 15, 1887. Samuel Thurmond was a Civil War veteran, a respected member of his community, and a highly successful lawyer. He was reputed for his honest and charismatic nature, and was apparently one of the most popular people in Athens. His trustworthy reputation and his determination in all areas of his life left him among Athens’ wealthiest and most successful, and was estimated to be worth “more than one hundred thousand,” at the time of his death in 1887. Colonel Thurmond died of Bright’s disease, as a result of a fatal kidney infection, in the comfort of his Athens residence. Samuel Thurmond was married to Elizabeth Amanda Long Thurmond, and had two daughters, Sallie and Carrie. The family shares one of the most desirable plots in the cemetery, as it has Sanford Stadium as its immediate backsplash. Samuel P. Thurmond will be remembered for his success in the courtroom, and his aptitude for social interaction.

Citation:

https://findagrave.net/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=27573070

</text>

Asaph King Childs, who was born on December 9th, 1820 in Springfield, Massachusetts was a well-known merchant and jeweler in Athens, Georgia. He is the founder of National Bank of Athens and Athens Hardware Company. He was also a Confederate veteran in the Civil War. Although he did not die in the battlefield and it is unknown of how he passed away, Childs died in July of 1902. His grave is located at the Oconee Cemetery of Athens, GA -- along with his wife, Susan Ingle Childs, and other Childs family members. Asaph Childs with his brother Otis, worked as silverman and jeweler in Milledgeville, GA from 1835 to 1846. Then, for a year, Childs moved to Athens, GA -- where he and his fellows mates partnered to open Hardware stores: “Two music shops and a photography studio, groceries and clothiers, and numerous other new ventures began.” Thanks to people like Asaph, small businesses grew in Athens than ever before the Civil War. From then on, Asaph continued to reside in Athens with his business and involvement in real estate and banking. One of the fascinating things about Asaph’s grave memorial is the burial with all his related families. All the Childs family members are buried together in the same space. Furthermore, the family’s grave site has a distinct memorial statue -- a female figure holding a long cross. With Childs’ involvement in the Civil War as a Confederate veteran and dedication towards the city of Athens business, perhaps the family’s grave site includes sophisticated memorials to honor the family.

Works Cited "American Silversmiths."
