The Oconee Hill Cemetery is only steps from the University of Georgia campus and acts
as a legacy of the university’s past. While walking through the West Hill section, I came across
two very familiar names on a joint gravestone for a husband and wife. (See Picture #4) The
family’s surname, Russell, belongs to one of the freshman residence halls. Likewise, the
husband’s mother’s maiden name, Brumby, belongs to another freshman residence hall. Curious
for a connection, I started researching.
Through my research, I was able to piece together the outlines of a Russell family story.
The husband on the gravestone, William John Russell IV, had quiet a prominent family in
Georgia. His parents, depicted on the stone, were Rebecca Harriet (Brumby) Russell and William
John Russell. William was a “prosperous middle class textile manufacturer who lost all of his
possessions in the civil war (1861-1865)” 1
William and Rebecca had six children, including
William John Russell IV, who is laid to rest in Oconee Hill Cemetery. One of the other six
children, Richard B. Russell Sr., graduated 4th in his class from UGA in 1879, and he went on to
graduate law school at UGA the following year. In his lifetime, he worked in education, served
on both the Georgia Court of Appeals and the state’s supreme court, and fathered fifteen
children. According to the University of Georgia website, Russell hall is named after his son
Richard B. Russell, Jr. 2
Not surprisingly, any biography of Rebecca Harriet (Brumby) Russell is either
nonexistent or difficult to find. The Brumby family has its roots in Marietta, however, and
Richard B. Russell Sr. was born in Marietta. It seems safe to infer, then, that Rebecca Harriet
comes from the well-known Brumby family in Marietta, Georgia. The Brumby family moved
from Mississippi to Marietta in 1861 and quickly became an influential family. The family
founded the Brumby Chair Company, which is still in business today.3
Over the years, members
of the family attended the University of Georgia. Most recently, Otis A. Brumby Jr. received the
Distinguished Service Scroll Award from the law school’s alumni association for his dedication
to the legal profession and work for free speech rights in 2010.
4
Although the university website cites no namesake for Brumby Hall, I believe that we
can say with almost perfect certainty that the hall traces back to that famous family from
Mississippi. Today, some decedents of these prominent families are still active at the university.
With only a few steps behind the stadium, however, we can trace the historical roots of these
influential families. At least once, as evidenced by this gravesite, the two families crossed over
and produced children to carry on the legacy. </text>

Sampson W. Harris, a prominent figure from Athens, lived until the age of 48, from 1809 to 1857. Born in Elbert County, Georgia to Stephen Willis Harris and Sarah Herndon Harris, he went on to attend the University of Georgia in 1828. There, he studied through the law program and passed the bar exam in 1830. Harris then opened a law practice and carried out his career in law in Athens, but soon moved into the political realm, serving in the Georgia State House of Representatives from 1834-1835. Three years later, he aimed for a more prominent role in politics, and moved to Wetumpka, Alabama, where he became the solicitor of the Eighth Circuit. In 1844 and 1845, he was elected to and served in the State Senate of Alabama. His final role was during the years of 1846-1855, where he served in the United States House of Representatives on behalf of Alabama.
However, Harris soon fell into poor health, and turned down another bid for Congress. He passed away a few short weeks later in Washington, DC, and was brought back to Athens, Georgia. He was survived by his wife, Paulina Harris, and four of his five siblings. A small monument still stands in Washington, DC, commemorating Harris and his work for his country.

Colonel Samuel P. Thurmond was born April 2nd, 1820, and died July 15, 1887. Samuel Thurmond was a Civil War veteran, a respected member of his community, and a highly successful lawyer. He was reputed for his honest and charismatic nature, and was apparently one of the most popular people in Athens. His trustworthy reputation and his determination in all areas of his life left him among Athens’ wealthiest and most successful, and was estimated to be worth “more than one hundred thousand,” at the time of his death in 1887. Colonel Thurmond died of Bright’s disease, as a result of a fatal kidney infection, in the comfort of his Athens residence. Samuel Thurmond was married to Elizabeth Amanda Long Thurmond, and had two daughters, Sallie and Carrie. The family shares one of the most desirable plots in the cemetery, as it has Sanford Stadium as its immediate backsplash. Samuel P. Thurmond will be remembered for his success in the courtroom, and his aptitude for social interaction.<br /><br /><address>Citation:</address><address>https://findagrave.net/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&amp;GRid=27573070</address><address><span> </span></address></text>

Sara Cobb Baxter was born to Howell Cobb and Mary McKinley in Athens, Georgia on March 7, 1882. She was the great-great-granddaughter of William McKinley and a member of the upper class. She was married to Richard Bolling Baxter. It is recorded that she lived during the mid 1910s on Milledge Avenue and moved to Baxter Street by the early 1920s. She was an active socialite in the Athens community, frequently attending social events like teas and the Dearing Street Dancing club’s evenings, where her attire was often chronicled in the Athens Banner. She appears to have also had a passing interest in acting, having played the supporting role of Sissy in the Colonial Theater’s amateur production of “Deestrick Skule.” She held several leadership roles in community organizations, apart from being a member of the Garden Club. Baxter was the chairman of the social service committee for the Business and Professional Women’s Club and the chairman of the nominating committee for the Young Women’s Christian Association. She was also a member of the invitations committee that helped to organized Georgia Day, an annual national event for UGA alumni. She received an AB from UGA in 1923. She then worked as a secretary to UGA’s chancellor “Uncle Dave” Barrow. She and her husband made frequent visits to Atlanta to visit her sister, the well-known Carolyn Cobb. </text>
