James Wallace 'Wally' Butts (February 7, 1905-December 17, 1973).
Wally Butts graduated from Mercer University in Macon, GA. He began his coaching career on the high school level, coaching three different high schools in Georgia and Kentucky over a span of ten years. He came to Georgia on the staff of Joel Hunt in 1938 and became head coach in 1939. He would remain as head football coach of the Bulldogs through 1960, compiling a 140-86-9 record with four SEC Championships and one national title. He was also athletics directer through 1963. After leaving athletics, Butts entered the insurance business. He had three children, Fay, Nancy, and Jean, with his wife Winifred.
