Coverage

West Hill, plot 164, is dedicated to Henry Russell Jones Long and his immediate family. His older brother, Crawford Long was interred on East Hill, plot 24. The Long brothers were a notable part of the Athens community during the late 19th century. Their dedication to medicine impacted not only the city of Athens, but the world as well. Henry Russell Jones Long was born in 1823. Born and raised in Athens, Georgia, he graduated from the University of Georgia in 1845 with a degree in medicine. Two years after his graduation, Henry married Susan Stroud. In the years following their marriage, Henry and his wife had three children. Mary Elizabeth was Henry's oldest daughter, who went on to marry Stephen Gould. Valeria Irena, who was born two years after Mary Elizabeth in 1850, married Augustin Howze. James William Long, the only son of Henry, was born two years after Valeria Irena and married Julia Dorroh. All of Henry Long's children as well as their spouses were interred in the West Hill plot, which explains the "Howze" and "Gould" inscriptions on the family memorial. Throughout his life, Henry Long played an essential role in the local community through his profession. As stated in Dr. Crawford Long: The Distinguished Physician-Pharmacist, Henry was both a practicing physician as well as the owner of a drug store on Broad Street, which sat directly across from the entrance to the University of Georgia campus. Henry Long and his brother, Crawford Long, bought the drug store from Doctor E.R. Ware in 1852 and continued to run the business for years afterward. During the Civil War, H.R. Long also served as a surgeon for the Confederate Army, which is thus displayed through the Confederate Cross upon his gravesite. He was a big supporter of the Confederate cause, often contributing money to its efforts before and during the Civil War. Henry died in Athens in 1888. Henry Long's brother, Crawford Long, is buried in East Hill. According to Dr. Crawford Long: The Distinguished Physician-Pharmacist, Crawford was born in November of 1815. He attended the University of Georgia at the age of 14, where he became lifelong friends with Alexander Stephens and participated in the Demosthenian Literary Society. He was the youngest graduate of the school to date. After graduating from the University of Georgia and furthering his medical education in Pennsylvania, Crawford began his practice as a medical surgeon in Jefferson, Georgia. Crawford Long is considered to be the first physician to discover anesthesia, which occurred through his use of Ether while conducting surgery in March of 1842. As an article in the Athens Banner explained, Crawford realized Ether’s pain masking abilities after watching his friends use the drug for recreation. After leading his practice in Jefferson for a few years, Crawford relocated to Athens to start the drug store business with his little brother. From 1851 and until his passing, Crawford enjoyed leading a busy life in Athens and was a notable citizen within the growing town. In 1878, Crawford died of a stroke and was interred in the East Hill of Oconee Hill Cemetery. The famous physician's legacy lived on through various memorials, such as Emory University's hospital that was named after him.
