George Ellis Atkisson was born September 12, 1881 to to Mr. and Mrs. G.E. Atkisson. He died February 17, 1918 in Decatur, Ga at the age of 36. He left behind his wife, Miss Vinnie Wallace Atkisson, and three children. Atkisson was a printer by trade and was a member of the International Typographical Union, as his headstone contains an inscription of the Union’s insignia. From some time after his marriage until his death, he resided in Decatur, however his family was from Athens. While living in Athens, Atkisson worked for the McGregor Company, a stationary and printing company originally located at the corner of Broad and College. George Ellis Atkisson and Vinnie Wallace were married in February of 1912 in the home of Rev. George E. Stone. Together they had three children, Ellis, Edith, and Horace. He died of an unspecified illness Sunday February 17, 1918 in his Decatur home, and his body was brought to his mother’s home in Athens until his burial in Oconee Hill Cemetery on February 19. The funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church. His grave reads: "His toils are past, his work is done. He fought the fight - the victory won."
