Nora Elizabeth Hughes was born on January 16th, 1927 in Athens, Georgia. Her parents were named Arthur and Margie Hughes. Over the course of her life, she was married twice, first to Horace Whitman. From that marriage, she had four daughters, Melody, Pamela, Paulette and Mary Elizabeth. Following the death of her first husband, she remarried to a man named Otis Mason, resulting in the name found on her tombstone, Nora Elizabeth Mason. From her second marriage, she had two more children, Yvonne and James. A notable point in her career occurred during the second world war when she moved to Washington D.C. to work as a cryptologist for the United States government. On October 11th, 2012, Nora Elizabeth Mason passed away as a result of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease during the night. The family she left behind was a large one, consisting of her 6 children, their spouses, 15 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Her tombstone is a simple one, with “US Army” and “World War II” engravings that honor her efforts during the war and a cross displaying her religious beliefs.
