Dr. William Lorenzo Moss was born in Athens, Georgia on August 23rd, 1876. He went on to earn his bachelors degree from the University of Georgia in 1897 and later his M.D. from John’s Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1905. During his career, he taught at both Yale and Harvard, as well as, as the University of Georgia School of Medicine (which is now Georgia Regents University) where he was also the Dean. His areas of research included immunology, blood types, and tropical diseases. He is best known for the development of the Moss System, which is a classification of blood groups labeled I through IV. This blood typing technique was used until World War II when the current system replaced it. He is known for contributing to immunizations for diseases such as diphtheria, tuberculosis, and influenza. He led medical research expeditions to the Caribbean, South Africa, and South Pacific. He was married to Elizabeth Wilde and they had three children together.
