George Anderson Mell was born on November 11, of 1852 in Liberty County and died in Athens in 1931. Born in Walthourville, he lived most of his life in Georgia. He was the son of James B. Mell and Anna Mariah Macintosh. [1] He first married Bessie Rutherford on September 4 of 1884, who was born in 1855, and died in October 1894. George and Bessie had four children together before her death. After Bessie's death, George married Lurene Howard on February 6, 1896, who died August 6, 1898. [1] Following Lurene’s death, Mell married Daisy Beatrice Mell, who was married to George until his death and buried with him In Oconee Hill. Mell was a banker in Athens, GA for most of his life. [1] He also founded, with his wife Bessie, the Athens Industrial Home, which was later named the Bessie-Mell Industrial home. George Mell’s second wife was Daisy Mell, who founded the League of Woman Voters in Athens foundation and was also extremely involved with the Red Cross during WWI. She also served as chairman of the American Defense Society for Clarke County and a member of the Council of National Defense. [1]
