Georgia-Auburn Chalice

Permit, me, Captain Butler…to present to you and the Athens team this beautiful gift.  It was nobly and worthily won.
- Mamie Lou Hinton, football team sponsor.  Atlanta Constitution, November 25, 1894

This silver chalice was awarded to the winner of the 1894 contest between Georgia and Auburn on Nov. 24, 1894.  This contest was played at Atlanta's Athletic Park, a playing field near Auburn Ave. that has long since been demolished and rebuilt for other purposes.

The inscription on the chalice is as follows:

University of Georgia vs Auburn
Nov 24 1894
Presented by
Alumni and friends of both Colleges
won by
University of Georgia football team
Score - University 10 Auburn 8

To the best of our knowledge, this chalice is the oldest extant UGA football artifact.  It will be housed in the vaults of the Richard B. Russell Special Collections Libraries Building at the conclusion of this exhibit.
